Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh has moved the Karnataka High Court seeking to quash a First Information Report (FIR) registered against him in connection with a controversy surrounding the film Kantara. The petition comes after a complaint alleged that Singh’s mimicry of a sequence from the critically acclaimed Kannada film had hurt sentiments.

The actor has sought legal relief from the Karnataka High Court after an FIR was registered against him over a mimicry act linked to ‘Kantara’. His legal team argues that the performance was meant as admiration, not mockery.

According to reports, the complaint was filed soon after a video clip of the actor recreating a popular moment from the film surfaced online. The complainant claimed that Singh’s act amounted to disrespect towards the cultural and spiritual themes portrayed in the film. ‘Kantara’, directed by and starring Rishab Shetty, is deeply rooted in coastal Karnataka’s folklore and traditions, which has led to strong emotional connections among audiences.

In his plea before the High Court, Singh’s legal counsel contended that the actor’s performance was done in admiration of the film and its impact. The lawyer emphasized that the mimicry was an expression of appreciation and artistic tribute, not ridicule or insult. The petition further stated that there was no malicious intent behind the act and that registering an FIR in such circumstances was unwarranted.

The legal team has argued that the complaint lacks substantial grounds and that continuing criminal proceedings would amount to misuse of the legal process. They have requested the court to quash the FIR to prevent unnecessary harassment and to safeguard the actor’s fundamental rights, including freedom of expression.

The controversy has sparked debate on social media, with opinions divided. While some netizens believe public figures must exercise caution when engaging with culturally sensitive material, others argue that artistic appreciation should not be criminalized. The case also brings into focus the growing number of legal actions initiated against celebrities over public appearances and performances.

As of now, the Karnataka High Court is expected to hear the matter in the coming days. The outcome of the petition could set an important precedent regarding the boundaries between artistic homage and alleged offense in India’s evolving entertainment landscape.
