Taimur Ali Khan asks Saif Ali Khan how long he plans to keep acting; actor says ‘as long as I can’t

Conversations about work life balance are not new in the film industry, where long schedules and constant travel often keep actors away from their families. Recently, actor Saif Ali Khan opened up about this reality during a candid chat with his sister Soha Ali Khan on her podcast sharing an interesting moment involving his son Taimur Ali Khan.

During the discussion Saif revealed that Taimur recently asked him how long he planned to continue working as an actor. Recalling the conversation Saif said he told his son that he intends to keep acting “as long as I can,” calling it a job he hopes to do forever. However, he joked that the response did not entirely satisfy the family.

The actor also reflected on how work life balance has evolved over time within the industry. According to Saif, maintaining that balance becomes easier when actors have the flexibility that comes with experience and success. He pointed out that some of his colleagues have managed to create structured routines that allow them to spend meaningful time with their families.

Saif explained that many actors start work early in the morning, often beginning their day around 7 am so that filming can start by 9 am. With disciplined schedules, they are able to complete substantial portions of their work during the day and still return home in the evening to spend time with their children before bedtime.

He described the rhythm of the profession as periods of intense work followed by breaks. Actors may work continuously for a month or two after which they step away for some time, allowing them to recharge and focus on family life.

To explain this idea further, Saif used the metaphor of climbing a mountain. He said that just like mountaineers need a reliable base camp before attempting a climb, people also need stability in their personal lives. If someone is constantly “climbing the mountain,” there is no time to maintain that base camp, which is essential for continuing the journey.

Saif has spent over three decades in the Hindi film industry. The son of legendary cricketer Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi and veteran actor Sharmila Tagore, he made his film debut with the 1993 drama Parampara directed by Yash Chopra.

His career saw a major shift in the early 2000s with films like Dil Chahta Hai and Love Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega, which helped him break away from the typical romantic hero image. Later, his performance in Omkara earned critical acclaim and showcased his range as an actor.

Most recently Saif appeared alongside Jaideep Ahlawat in Jewel Thief: The Heist Begins, an action thriller released on Netflix. He will next be seen in Haiwaan directed by Priyadarshan, which also reunites him with actor Akshay Kumar.

Even after decades in the industry, Saif’s perspective on balancing work and family suggests that the challenge remains ongoing but one that can be managed with the right priorities.
