Actor and filmmaker Aamir Khan has reportedly changed his earlier stance regarding the digital release of his upcoming film Sitaare Zameen Par. The movie which was initially planned to remain exclusive to theatres is now expected to stream on the OTT platform SonyLIV.

For months Aamir had repeatedly stated that the film would not be released on OTT stressing the importance of preserving the theatrical experience. He believed audiences should watch the film on the big screen and had even turned down reportedly massive offers from streaming platforms earlier.

During the film’s theatrical run in June 2025, the actor maintained this position strongly. Reports suggested that offers worth around ₹125 crore from platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video were declined in order to keep the focus on cinemas.

However months after its release, the plan appears to have shifted. The film first experimented with a digital rental model on YouTube where viewers could watch it by paying a small fee. Now, it is set to take a more traditional OTT route with a streaming release on SonyLIV.

The move marks a noticeable reversal from Aamir’s earlier promise, but it also reflects how distribution strategies continue to evolve in the film industry. With audiences consuming content across multiple platforms even filmmakers who strongly support theatrical releases often eventually turn to streaming to reach a wider audience.

Sitaare Zameen Par has already generated strong curiosity among fans, especially because it is widely seen as a spiritual successor to Aamir’s beloved 2007 film Taare Zameen Par. The upcoming OTT premiere is expected to bring the film to viewers who may have missed it in theatres.

Whether the shift sparks debate or simply broadens the film’s reach, one thing is certain: the conversation around theatrical versus OTT releases in Bollywood is far from over.
