Samir Soni Finally Gets the ‘Green Flag’ Tag for His Baghban Character After 20 Years

Two decades after the release of Baghban, Samir Soni is finally receiving overdue appreciation for portraying one of Hindi cinema’s…

Samir Soni, an actor, is the subject of an unexpected rise in admiration- more than twenty years after the premiere of the legendary family drama Baghban.

The actor, who appeared in the 2003 film as one of the sons of Amitabh Bachchan, has just responded to a Gen Z content creator who referred to his character as a green flag, and it is hard to disagree with the new opinion.

A video made by a young influencer as a viral reel goes back to Baghban and reflects on the idea that all the sons in the movie were purely bad guys. In specific, she notes that the character of Samir tended to act in a practical and responsible manner. Since he was asking his father questions about financial planning to initial petty changes in his house, the influencer claims that such actions were based on logic rather than disrespect. She also sarcastically calls Baghban a trauma-inducing movie, indicating that the film put a lot of emotional guilt on children yet it did not touch upon the real family dynamics.

In response to the video, Samir Soni posted it on his Instagram and wrote, “After 20 years, there is some redemption. Just love the new generation.” He confessed that upon the release of the film, people were too emotionally attached to the characters of Amitabh Bachchan and Hema Malini, and the sons were judged negatively accordingly. However, juvenile viewers are starting to doubt the one-sided account with time.

Directed by B. R. Chopra, Baghban is a story of an old couple who are left by their four sons after retiring, which found a lot of appeal to the viewers in the early 2000s. Although the movie is still remembered as a weep, a shift in societal attitudes and discourse over boundaries, money and collective responsibility has seen the characters in the film being more deconstructively interpreted.

This retrospective value is poetic justice to Samir, and evidence that story-telling changes with each generation.
