Richa Chadha has once again sparked an important conversation around ageism in Bollywood by revealing that she was offered the role of Hrithik Roshan’s mother in the film Agneepath when she was only 21 years old.

In an interview quoted by Times of India Richa shared that she immediately declined the offer as she felt it was ethically wrong. According to the actor casting a very young woman in an older role takes away opportunities from senior actresses who are more age appropriate and deserving. She said the decision was not just about her career but also about standing up against an unfair system that sidelines older women in the industry.

Richa also revealed that after turning down the role the casting director stopped reaching out to her for work. While the decision may have cost her opportunities at the time she maintains that it was the right thing to do. She described the practice as disrespectful and said it reflects a larger problem where younger actresses are often pushed into aged roles using makeup rather than giving veteran performers their due.

Ironically Richa herself made her debut playing a mother in Gangs of Wasseypur directed by Anurag Kashyap. While the role brought her critical acclaim she later admitted that taking on such an aged character so early in her career was not the best decision. She has said in past interviews that she regrets doing the role as it impacted how the industry perceived her age and casting potential.

Over the years Richa Chadha has carved a niche for herself with strong unconventional roles and has remained vocal about issues like gender bias and ageism in cinema. Her revelation about Agneepath once again highlights the challenges women face in Bollywood and the difficult choices actors often have to make between career growth and personal ethics.
