Rani Mukerji Calls Black Career Defining Recalls Magic Of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai

Rani Mukerji reflects on the films that shaped her career while promoting Mardaani 3 in an IMDb exclusive interview.

With a career spanning more than three decades, Rani Mukerji recently revisited some of the most memorable performances of her journey in an exclusive conversation with IMDb while promoting Mardaani 3. From Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Saathiya to Black and the Mardaani franchise, the actor opened up about how these films shaped both her career and audience perception.

Talking about her role as Tina in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Mukerji recalled the moment director Karan Johar narrated the story to her. She said there was a magical energy in the room during that narration and remembered how sincere and passionate Johar was about the film. According to Mukerji, the film helped her understand how audiences embraced her as an actor.

She also highlighted how the character of Tina has remained relevant even decades later. Mukerji noted that in the thirty years since the film’s release, Tina continues to resonate with audiences across different generations.

Reflecting on Saathiya, Mukerji shared that the film told the story of a young woman who stood firmly by her choices in life. She explained that the character strongly connected with young women at the time because it portrayed someone balancing both career aspirations and personal relationships.

Speaking about Hum Tum, the actor said the film played an important role in changing the way women were portrayed in mainstream cinema. Mukerji described her character Riya as someone who questioned the male lead’s intentions and challenged the idea of marriage being based on guilt rather than genuine love.

Mukerji also looked back fondly at Bunty Aur Babli, calling it one of her favourite films to shoot. She pointed out that the film was among the first mainstream Hindi films to showcase small town India prominently, moving away from the glamorous international settings that dominated Bollywood at the time.

However, it was Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Black that Mukerji described as a true turning point in her career. She called the film career defining and admitted that she might never be able to recreate the magic of that performance again. The actor also revealed that she initially found it hard to believe that Bhansali trusted her with such a demanding role.

According to Mukerji, Black taught her an important life lesson about gratitude and appreciating the things we often take for granted.

Turning to the Mardaani franchise, Mukerji spoke about the inspiration behind the films. She explained that the idea came from the collective anger felt across the country following the Nirbhaya case. The actor emphasised that the films aim to bring real crimes and social issues to the big screen to raise awareness.

She added that the core message of the franchise remains simple but powerful that every life matters.
