Nawazuddin Siddiqui, celebrated for his powerful and unconventional performances, recently spoke candidly about racism and beauty standards in Hindi cinema during a conversation with Zoom. Reflecting on his own journey, he admitted that while he has experienced bias, the industry still managed to carve out a space for him.

Talking about how casting decisions are often influenced, Nawazuddin explained that the problem goes beyond individuals—it begins with the way stories are written. He said, “People have their perspective. But don’t use that in the system. If she is like this, she can’t be the lead. But it’s not their fault because the stories are written like that. A girl who is fair, stories are written about her. You get a brief. A lot of people are struggling with it.”

He emphasised that beauty is subjective and varies across cultures, adding that such labels should never limit an actor’s potential. In a heartfelt moment, Nawazuddin expressed deep admiration for late actor Smita Patil, stating that he has never seen anyone more beautiful on screen, highlighting her timeless appeal and authenticity.

A graduate of the National School of Drama, Nawazuddin built his career from small roles in films like Sarfarosh and Munna Bhai M.B.B.S., before gaining recognition with Black Friday and later achieving widespread acclaim through Gangs of Wasseypur.

On the work front, he will next appear in Main Actor Nahi Hoon and Noorani Chehra. He is also set to feature in the sequel to Tumbbad, reportedly playing the antagonist. In 2025, he was seen reprising his role in Raat Akeli Hai: The Bansal Murders and starring in Thamma.
