Kriti Sanon Calls Out Bollywood’s Gender Pay Gap: ‘Female Lead’s Fee Gets Negotiated First’

The debate around pay parity in Bollywood continues to grow, with several actresses speaking openly about unequal treatment in the industry. Now, Kriti Sanon has shared her experience, saying patriarchy still plays a major role in how actresses are treated and paid in films.

In a conversation with GQ, Kriti spoke about the financial imbalance female actors often face. “There’s been some struggle around money. When they (producers) have to cut corners, they often negotiate down the female lead’s fee, even though a large chunk of the budget goes to the male actor,” she said.

Calling the system deeply rooted in patriarchy, Kriti added, “Patriarchy is still deeply ingrained in the industry, and we have to keep shaking things up to move towards equality.” She also pointed out subtle biases on film sets, saying there is often pressure to make sure the female actor is ready first so the male actor does not have to wait. “It’s subconscious, but it needs to change,” she explained.

Kriti also recalled moments from the early phase of her career when she felt unequal treatment. “I remember small things, like a male co-star, who wasn’t a senior, getting a better car. Of course, it wasn’t about the car, but about being respected equally,” she shared.

The actor further revealed that this mindset also inspired her to step into production with Do Patti. She said she wants to create more opportunities for women because strong, well-written female roles are still limited in mainstream cinema.

Recently, Saif Ali Khan also spoke about the issue, saying actors should be paid according to the audience they bring to theatres, regardless of gender.
