Filmmaker Imtiaz Ali has addressed ongoing speculation about sequels to two of his most loved films, Jab We Met and Tamasha. In a recent conversation, the director made it clear that he currently has no plans to revisit either story.
Fans have often wondered what happened to Geet and Aditya after Jab We Met, but Imtiaz believes some stories are better left as they are. Speaking candidly, he shared that while he frequently hears requests for sequels, he remains cautious about revisiting past successes.
“I do keep hearing about it. To those who ask me about them, I say, ‘Love Aaj Kal 2 bhi toh banayi thi na, voh toh itni achhi nahi gayi’,” he said, hinting that sequels don’t always recreate the magic of the original.
Elaborating further, Imtiaz explained that he only considers projects that genuinely inspire him as a storyteller. “I feel that if there’s something that comes that strongly to me as a maker, then I will… But I don’t think, especially for Jab We Met, I won’t. Some things are best left untouched,” he added.
Both Jab We Met (2007) and Tamasha (2015) are regarded as some of his finest works, enjoying a strong fan following even years after their release.
The director also stressed that he does not believe in making films purely for commercial reasons. Instead, he prefers stories that come from a place of passion and curiosity, rather than a calculated attempt at success, reinforcing his commitment to meaningful storytelling.
