Imran Khan Calls Marriage With Avantika Malik Unhealthy; Ending It Helped Him Become His Best Version

Bollywood actor Imran Khan has opened up candidly about his personal life, revealing that his eight-year marriage to Avantika Malik eventually became “unhealthy” and that choosing to end it was a key step toward becoming a better version of himself. This comes amid his candid conversations about mental health and recovery, where he has spoken openly about anxiety, depression, and personal growth.

Imran Khan revealed that his journey toward understanding himself began as far back as 2016, long before the marriage officially ended in 2019. During this time, he began introspection and therapy, helping him recognise that he wasn’t living true to the person he wanted to be. Khan described this period as one where he was “interacting with the world out of fear and crippling anxiety,” and in his own words — “an absolute wreck.”

He credits early exposure to mental health conversations — from his mother, a psychoanalyst — for helping him take these issues seriously and start addressing them head-on. Imran and Avantika first met way back in 2002, later tying the knot in 2011. They were married for about eight years and share a daughter, Imara Malik Khan (born in 2014).

Reflecting on their relationship, Khan said that they entered it very young, without the life experience to know what a healthy partnership looked like. As they grew older in different ways, they got caught in a cycle they couldn’t break — one that wasn’t helping either of them become their best selves. Recognising this was the catalyst for a difficult but necessary decision: to part ways.

“We were not in sync, and we couldn’t support each other in being the best versions of ourselves,” he said in the interview. Choosing to end the marriage wasn’t a surrender, but a turning point toward healing and growth, he explained.

While rumours have often swirled about the impact of the divorce on his mental health, Imran was clear that the worst years were actually within the marriage itself, not after the split. Many people assumed his separation triggered his struggles, but he stressed that ending the relationship helped him finally move forward.

He also refrained from blaming anyone — emphasising that both individuals brought their own experiences into the relationship and that walking away ultimately created space for healthier growth.

A major part of Imran’s life since the separation has been raising his daughter. He shared that Imara became his anchor — a source of strength and motivation as he worked on his emotional wellbeing.

Imran has been a hands-on single parent, taking responsibility for his daughter’s daily care during his time with her — from packing her lunch to dropping her at school and reading to her before bed. He said he values this time immensely and doesn’t want staff or helpers to take these moments away from him.

Since his divorce from Avantika, Imran’s personal life has evolved. He took a long break from acting but recently made a cameo in the film Happy Patel and is involved in producing an upcoming film project. He has also been linked with actress Lekha Washington, a relationship he has acknowledged publicly.

Imran Khan’s reflections highlight a growing trend in Bollywood — where celebrities are more openly discussing mental health, relationships, and personal transformation. Rather than hiding emotional struggles, many stars are now talking about them, helping break stigma around topics like anxiety, therapy, and the complexities of long-term relationships.
