Filmmaker Karan Johar has openly declared himself a lifelong admirer of Yami Gautam after watching her latest film Haq on Netflix. Known for rarely expressing unfiltered praise, Karan’s emotional reaction has struck a chord with fans and industry insiders alike.
Taking to social media, Karan shared a heartfelt note describing how deeply Haq: The Shazia Bano Story affected him. He admitted that the film moved him to tears and left him speechless by the end, adding that he regretted not watching the film on the big screen. Haq is every bit entertaining.
“The Shazia Bano story and victory moved me to a puddle of tears… I was speechless at the end and then clapped loudly for the film and lamented that I missed the opportunity of watching this exceptionally empowering film in the cinema…”
What stood out most for Karan was Yami Gautam’s performance, which he called one of the finest he has witnessed in years.
“I don’t think I have been this moved by a performance in many, many years… to say that Yami Gautam is brilliant, outstanding, pathbreaking is still not saying enough. Her silences, her stares, her last monologue and her stance throughout the film is a masterclass of craft and conviction… Salute and salaam to her!”
Karan also praised director Suparn Verma for his restrained and emotionally grounded storytelling, noting how the film never lets theatrics overpower its message.
“He directs the film with such an assured hand, never letting theatrics overpower the emotion and always making the strength of the characters shine with strong silences…”
Actor Emraan Hashmi also received special mention, with Karan calling it his career-best performance.
“He portrays the insensitive and entitled husband like a bona fide veteran… you hate him and therefore you absolutely love his performance.”
The filmmaker further applauded Junglee Pictures, producers Vineet Jain and Amrita Pandey, along with writer Reshu Nath, for backing what he termed a brave, important, and empowering motion picture.
Karan concluded his note on an emotional high, declaring his admiration loud and clear; “Yami… I am a fan for life!”
