Actress Hansika Motwani has taken a significant legal battle against her estranged sister-in-law, Muskan Nancy James and has filed a 2 crore defamation suit in a Mumbai sessions court. The court case is a direct reaction to a set of social claims by James who accused the actress and her brother, Prashant Motwani, of domestic violence and harassment after her marriage had fallen apart.
As per the petition that Hansika made with the advocate Adnan Shaikh, the allegations, she claims, are completely unfounded and belong to a carefully orchestrated smear campaign. The actress claims that James has financial and not personal motives, namely, she says that James borrowed ₹ 27 lakh to cover wedding expenses and other lifestyle expenses but has not repaid the amount. Hansika claims that the domestic violence complaints were lodged as a retaliatory measure to avoid this debt and to blacken her reputation as a public figure.
Hansika also explained that she did not live with the couple when they were married, between 2020 and 2022. As she resided in a different household, she insists that she had little input into their household and thus, the allegations of harassment are logically incongruent. James has already filed an FIR claiming that the Motwani family was pressuring her to take costly gifts and was giving her so much mental anguish that she contracted Bell Palsy, a disorder of the facial muscles.
Alongside her claim of ₹2 crore in damages for the mental agony she has suffered, Hansika has also sought a permanent injunction at the Dindoshi sessions court to prevent James to post defamatory material on social media. She also wants an official public apology. Although Hansika has already approached the Bombay High Court to have the frivolous FIR filed against her quashed, this civil suit is a major escalation of the family feud that is going on.
