Did Ranbir Kapoor Break Friendship With Anurag Kashyap After Bombay Velvet Flopped?

Anurag Kashyap reveals Ranbir Kapoor was upset and wanted Bombay Velvet to be forgotten.

Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma’s ambitious 2015 film Bombay Velvet, directed by Anurag Kashyap, remains one of Bollywood’s biggest box-office failures. The film was meant to be a stylish noir drama and even marked Karan Johar’s acting debut, but its disastrous performance left a long lasting impact on everyone involved.

Now, new revelations suggest the failure may have strained the bond between Anurag Kashyap and Ranbir Kapoor.

In an interview with Screen, Anurag opened up about how the aftermath of the flop created awkwardness between them. The filmmaker revealed:

“I think Ranbir was very upset, and he keeps saying, ‘Why do you keep talking about Bombay Velvet? Just ignore it. The film didn’t work, it didn’t work, but you don’t have to talk about it all the time.’ But people ask me questions all the time, how can I just ignore that?”

He further admitted that the emotional burden of the failure affected their friendship:

“We don’t meet often. Whenever we meet, we just hug and greet each other. And at the beginning, I didn’t know how to face them because they had given me a lot of trust and love. I was dealing with my own demons.”

Kashyap added that he had to rebuild his confidence and shift to smaller, more intimate projects like Raman Raghav 2.0 to recover creatively. But with time, their interactions have reduced significantly, “Slowly, I think, we became distant.”

While both Ranbir and Anurag have moved on to greater success in their respective careers, fans still wonder if they will ever reunite for another project or if the memories of Bombay Velvet remain too bitter to revisit.
