Time has a funny way of rewriting narratives and Ranveer Singh is the biggest proof of that. Today, Ranveer Singh stands tall as one of the most profitable superstars in Indian cinema, with Dhurandhar smashing records and crossing ₹1200 crore worldwide, even outperforming films led by Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Hrithik Roshan, and Ranbir Kapoor. But there was a time when the industry did not see him as a “bankable” star.

When Ranveer Was Dropped From Bombay Velvet

Few people know that Ranveer Singh was once in contention for Bombay Velvet, directed by Anurag Kashyap. However, he was eventually replaced because the makers felt his market value at the time could not justify the film’s massive budget, especially when compared to Ranbir Kapoor.

Ranveer himself later spoke about this moment on Koffee With Karan, leaving host Karan Johar visibly stunned. The actor candidly admitted that he was told he could not carry the financial weight of such a big project back then.

Anurag Kashyap, too, confirmed that the decision was purely commercial. According to him, the industry believed Ranveer would not be able to justify the scale and budget of Bombay Velvet at that stage of his career. He also remarked how unpredictable the film industry can be, pointing out that the same people who once doubted Ranveer are now working with him again.

From Rejection to Record-Breaker

Fast forward to today, and Ranveer Singh’s journey feels nothing short of cinematic. From being deemed “not big enough” for a high-budget film to delivering one of the biggest box office successes in Hindi cinema, his rise has been dramatic and decisive.

With Dhurandhar rewriting records and Dhurandhar 2 already in the pipeline, Ranveer Singh has firmly established himself as a force the industry can no longer underestimate.

Sometimes, rejection is not the end of the road, it is just the beginning of a much bigger story.
