Border 2 Breaks Every Record Ever; Bollywood’s Biggest War Film Is Unstoppable

Border 2 has created history at the Indian box office. The war drama has officially become the highest-grossing Indian war film ever beating popular films like Uri: The Surgical Strike, Fighter and Kesari. The film achieved this massive milestone within just nine days of its release, proving its strong impact on audiences.

Directed by Anurag Singh Border 2 is a sequel to J.P. Dutta’s iconic 1997 film Border. The movie stars Sunny Deol, Varun Dhawan, Diljit Dosanjh and Ahan Shetty in lead roles and focuses on themes of patriotism, sacrifice and brotherhood.

By its ninth day in theatres, Border 2 collected ₹252.25 crore net in India that is around ₹303 crore gross domestically. One of the biggest highlights was its ₹60 crore net collection on Republic Day showing how strongly the film connected with patriotic emotions.

Overseas, the film earned more than $5 million taking its worldwide total to over ₹350 crore. With this, Border 2 has crossed the lifetime collections of: Uri: The Surgical Strike (₹342 crore worldwide), Fighter (₹344 crore worldwide) & Kesari (₹202 crore worldwide).

While Border 2 leads in box office collections older war films still dominate in terms of footfalls. The original Border remains the biggest war film ever when measured by ticket sales with over 3.7 crore tickets sold in India. Dharmendra’s Haqeeqat (1964–65) sold nearly 2 crore tickets.

So far, Border 2 has sold just over 1 crore tickets and it is unlikely to cross the records set by these classics. This difference is mainly because ticket prices were much lower in earlier decades.

The film is produced by Bhushan Kumar, Krishan Kumar, J.P. Dutta and Nidhi Dutta and also features Mona Singh, Sonam Bajwa, Medha Rana and Anya Singh in important roles. Given the film’s massive success Bhushan Kumar has confirmed that Border 3 is being considered.

Overall, Border 2 proves that war films still hold a strong place in Indian cinema. While it may not match older classics in footfalls its box office success marks a new chapter for the genre.
