The proposed O Romeo by Shahid Kapoor has got a great relief when a civil court in Mumbai turned down its release but this will not see its release being stopped and O Romeo can proceed to theatres as planned. The decision follows a legal appeal by Sanober Shaikh, the daughter of a late underworld boss Hussain Shaikh also known as Ustara, who alleged that the movie was based on the life of her late father and that it had been made without the consent of the family.
Sanober pleaded in her case that the film was showing her father as a gangster and this would bring negative publicity to her family. She applied an injunction to prevent the release and asked the makers to be prohibited to air the film. But upon listening to both parties, the court ruled that she had not tabled sufficient legal reasons to warrant suppression of the movie.
The judge noted that Sanober had previously demanded financial damages on the part of the film producers, which undermined her request to have an injunction imposed. The court further mentioned that she had known about the project way back but went to the court when the release date was close at hand. The judge had stated that this delay had been a disadvantage to her case.
Notably, the court declined to view the film prior to its release saying that it would be tantamount to the judicial censorship which is not permitted by law. It also conceded that the argument by the filmmakers that O Romeo is a fictional piece and not a biopic which it has significant disclaimers.
The crew of the film, producer Sajid Nadiadwala and director Vishal Bhardwaj remained adamant that the story was enlivened on imagination and artistic freedom and not true-life stories. The decision of the court has relieved the makers to move on without any legal huddles.
The lawyers of Sanober have cited that she can appeal against the order at the Bombay High Court. In the meantime, there is O Romeo, which is to be released on February 13, 2026, and Shahid Kapoor starred in the lead.
