Before Ranbir Kapoor, Prithviraj Kapoor played Lord Ram: A 93-year-old family legacy

As Ranbir Kapoor gears up to portray Lord Ram in Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana, he continues a legacy that began decades…

The Kapoor family’s connection to Lord Ram is a legacy that has quietly spanned generations. As Ranbir Kapoor prepares to step into the role in Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana, few realise that this association dates back nearly a century. Long before him, his great-grandfather Prithviraj Kapoor had already portrayed Lord Ram on screen.

In 1933, filmmaker Debaki Bose brought the epic to life with Seeta, produced by the East India Film Company. The film was among the earliest Bengali talkies and later reached a wider audience through its Hindi version. At its centre was a 28-year-old Prithviraj Kapoor, whose performance further strengthened his rising stardom after Alam Ara.

Durga Khote played Sita, marking her transition from Marathi to Hindi cinema, and she later became one of Indian cinema’s most respected character actors. Gul Hamid portrayed Laxman, while Trilok Kapoor appeared as Luv in one of his earliest roles, making the Kapoor brothers among the first from their family to enter films.

Now, decades later, the legacy continues. The upcoming Ramayana also stars Sai Pallavi, Yash and Sunny Deol, with production led by Namit Malhotra. While filmmaking scale and technology have evolved, the significance of the role remains timeless.
