Renowned singer Arijit Singh has decided to step away from playback singing and focus more deeply on Indian classical music. The singer recently shared this decision through a personal note on his private X (formerly Twitter) account. While many fans were shocked by the announcement, Arijit made it clear that he is not quitting music he is simply choosing a different artistic direction.

Arijit’s decision comes from a desire to explore music in its purest form. He expressed that Indian classical music demands discipline, patience, and lifelong learning, which now feels more meaningful to him than the fast paced playback industry. His note sparked curiosity and admiration among listeners who have followed his journey for years.

Soon after announcing his decision, Arijit surprised fans by performing live with renowned sitar player Anoushka Shankar at Kolkata’s Netaji Indoor Stadium. The performance marked an important moment in his musical journey. Arijit later admitted that he felt nervous on stage, as classical music requires restraint and deep understanding rather than showmanship.

The concert stood out for its simplicity. There were no flashy visuals or grand effects. Instead, the focus remained on melody, emotion, and silence—allowing the music to speak for itself. Arijit performed Maya Bhara Rati, a composition by Pt. Ravi Shankar, alongside Anoushka Shankar, leaving the audience deeply moved.

Music producer and entrepreneur Meghdut Roy Chowdhury, who met Arijit backstage, shared his thoughts on the singer’s decision. He described Arijit as extremely humble and grounded, despite his massive success. Meghdut noted that Arijit greeted legendary percussionist Pt. Bikram Ghosh by touching his feet, showing respect for the guru-shishya tradition.

According to Meghdut, Arijit sees himself as a student of music rather than a star. His choice to step away from playback singing reflects a desire to escape the mechanical nature of the industry and reconnect with sincerity, depth, and artistic truth.

Arijit announced his retirement from playback singing on January 27 but confirmed that he would complete projects he had already committed to. One such project is Ek Din, produced by Aamir Khan Productions and starring Junaid Khan.

Aamir Khan later spoke about meeting Arijit in West Bengal and admitted that he did try to convince the singer to reconsider his decision. However, he clarified that there was no pressure involved. Aamir respected Arijit’s choice and acknowledged that the singer seemed calm and confident about the path he has chosen.

Arijit Singh’s decision marks the beginning of a new phase rather than an end. By choosing classical music over playback singing, he is following his inner calling and prioritising artistic growth over trends. While fans may miss his voice in films, many admire his courage to choose meaning over popularity.
