The Indian film industry is shrouded in gloom after the death of the iconic playback singer Asha Bhosle who died on Sunday, April 12, 2026, aged 92. Even as the country continues to struggle to come to terms with the loss of one of its most diverse and popular voices, Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh was one of the many legends to have paid his last send-off to her Mumbai home.

Ranveer Singh was seen to be emotionally overwhelmed as he stepped out of the house of singer in Lower Parel. The actor, whose typical energy and energious personality could be described as high, was unusually quiet and somber, seemingly struggling to restrain his tears as he was fighting his way through the mass of reporters to his car. He had earlier in the day paid a heartfelt tribute on social media, publishing an old black-and-white photo of him alongside the melody queen with the words inscribed as Irreplaceable, incomparable. Rest in Power.

The legendary singer, who had recorded more than 12,000 songs in a 8-decade long career was interred with state honours on Monday at the Shivaji Park crematorium. Her casket, with white lilies, and draped in the national tricolour, became a last tribute to her being a cultural giant. There were also other celebrities in the form of Sachin Tendulkar, Tabu and Aamir Khan who were there to contribute towards her family, namely her son Anand and her granddaughter Zanai.

The death of Asa Bhosle signals the death of an age in Indian music. Soulful ghazals and high-voltage cabarets, her voice was the sound of Indian cinema throughout generations. Although the Queen of Indipop has taken her last bow, her huge collection of music is an everlasting tribute, so that her voice will be heard in the hearts of followers all over the world centuries to come.
