When Team India lifted the T20 World Cup trophy after defeating New Zealand by a massive margin celebrations erupted across the country. Fans, celebrities and cricket lovers flooded social media with congratulatory messages for the Men in Blue. Among them was legendary actor Amitabh Bachchan who shared a rather humorous take on India’s victory.
India delivered a dominant performance in the final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on March 8, beating New Zealand by 96 runs to defend their world title. The win marked a historic moment as India became the first team to win back to back T20 World Cups and the only side to lift the trophy three times.
While many Bollywood celebrities celebrated the victory with heartfelt messages Amitabh Bachchan jokingly suggested that India won because he chose not to watch the match.
Taking to X, the veteran actor posted pictures of the moment Team India lifted the trophy, captured from his television screen at home. In the caption he wrote in Hindi “कहा था नहीं देखूँगा तो जीत जाएँगे! हो गया”.
His comment referred to the common superstition among sports fans that their favorite team sometimes performs better when they are not watching the game live. Bachchan has earlier joked on social media about being “bad luck” for Team India whenever he watches their matches.
Fans quickly joined in on the fun in the comment section. One user wrote that Bachchan should continue making this “sacrifice” for India’s victories while another joked that he should avoid watching every important match from now on. Many others admitted they had similar superstitions during high pressure games.
Several Bollywood stars also celebrated India’s triumph online. Actor Shah Rukh Khan praised the team for their dominant performance and congratulated them for making the country proud. Ajay Devgn said his throat was sore from cheering but his smile would last all week. Meanwhile, Akshay Kumar shared a celebratory GIF, calling the victory a moment of joy for every household.
On the field, India delivered a stunning performance. Batting first, the team posted a massive total of 255 for 5 in 20 overs, the highest score ever recorded in a T20 World Cup final. New Zealand struggled in the chase and were bowled out for 159.
Fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah was named Player of the Final for his outstanding bowling figures of 4/15, while Sanju Samson earned the Player of the Tournament award after scoring 321 runs during the competition.
India’s emphatic win not only secured another world title but also sparked celebrations across the nation, with fans and celebrities alike sharing their excitement online. And if Amitabh Bachchan is to be believed, perhaps staying away from the screen played its part too.
