The courtroom drama Haq, starring Emraan Hashmi and Yami Gautam, has been receiving a lot of attention from audiences. After its theatrical release on November 7, 2025 the film premiered on Netflix on January 2, 2026. The movie is inspired by the real life Shah Bano case one of India’s most important legal battles that changed the conversation around Muslim personal law.
After the film was released now, many viewers are curious about the real people behind the story especially Shah Bano’s husband, Mohammed Ahmed Khan, on whom Emraan Hashmi’s character is loosely based.
Mohammed Ahmed Khan passed away on April 4, 2006 in Indore. He was 94 years old at the time of his death and had reportedly been suffering from a high fever before he passed away. He was a lawyer by profession and remained a controversial figure due to the landmark case filed against him by his wife, Shah Bano.
Mohammed Ahmed Khan was married twice. Shah Bano was his first wife and they had five children together. Later he got married for the second time to a woman who was 14 years younger than him and had five children from that marriage as well.
In an interview, Shah Bano’s youngest son Jameel Ahmad revealed that constant conflicts between the two wives led his father to divorce Shah Bano. The divorce deeply affected Shah Bano both emotionally and physically.
Shah Bano approached the Supreme Court after being abandoned by her husband. In 1985 the court ruled in her favour granting her the right to maintenance. The verdict became a turning point in India’s legal history.
In an interview Shah Bano’s daughter Siddiqua Ahmed revealed that after losing the case Mohammed Ahmed Khan stopped practising law. She recalled how her mother had warned him that if the matter went to court he would never wear his lawyer’s black coat again and that is exactly what happened. After the verdict he reportedly gave up his profession.
Jameel Ahmad also spoke about how his father’s behaviour changed after his second marriage. According to him, Mohammed Ahmed Khan neglected the five children he had with Shah Bano and treated them with contempt. This period was extremely difficult for Shah Bano, who was divorced at the age of 60.
The stress affected her health and she developed high blood pressure and frequently fell ill. Despite these hardships Shah Bano showed immense courage and fought a legal battle for seven years before finally winning. Shah Bano’s journey is remembered not just as a legal case, but as a story of strength, dignity and resilience. Haq brings this powerful story to a new generation, reminding viewers of the personal pain behind historic judgments.
