Yami Gautam reflects on the massive success of Dhurandhar, saying the film has shifted focus back to storytelling and scripts…

Yami Gautam recently spoke about the record-breaking success of Dhurandhar and its sequel Dhurandhar: The Revenge, sharing how the films have reignited faith in strong storytelling and script-driven cinema.

Directed by Aditya Dhar, the two-part action drama turned into a massive theatrical phenomenon, earning praise from audiences, filmmakers, and critics alike. In a recent interview with Grazia, Yami reflected on what the franchise’s unprecedented success truly represents for the film industry.

Speaking about the changing landscape of Hindi cinema, she said, “This is why I said it was always a director’s medium – it was always script and all those basic things that make a film, a film. The basics are back, so that’s a massive shift.”

Yami further explained that the success of Dhurandhar was not just about numbers or box office records. According to her, the audience response proved that viewers are still eager to visit theatres if they are offered compelling cinema. “We were struggling to get people into theatres, and we were figuring and toying around with things. But people thronging theatres tells you – we are ready, we want you to make amazing films, we’ll watch, and yes, we’ll come repeatedly,” she added.

When asked whether the blockbuster success had changed her or Aditya personally, Yami insisted that nothing about their core values had shifted. She credited Aditya’s grounded personality for keeping them balanced through every phase of life and career. “Nothing has changed us as people. That also comes from Aditya, and the kind of person he is, very unaffected and extremely humble,” she said.

The actor revealed that she has seen her husband navigate both highs and lows without ever allowing frustration to take over. She added that spirituality continues to guide them as individuals and as a couple. “Both of us are extremely thankful to God, for us spirituality is very important, we believe in the Almighty. Good things happen to good people. What’s meant for you may be delayed but never denied,” Yami shared.

The first Dhurandhar film, starring Ranveer Singh, Akshaye Khanna, Arjun Rampal, R Madhavan, Sanjay Dutt and Rakesh Bedi, released in December last year and became a blockbuster despite mixed reviews.

Its sequel, Dhurandhar: The Revenge, released in March 2026 and exceeded expectations by outperforming the first part within just two weeks. The film reportedly crossed ₹1,782 crore worldwide and became the first Bollywood film to earn over ₹1,000 crore net domestically. Yami also made a special cameo appearance in the sequel.
