After years of rumours and endless fan speculation, Aamir Khan has finally confirmed that a sequel to 3 Idiots is officially in development. The actor also revealed that the much-loved franchise will once again be directed by Rajkumar Hirani, with producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra backing the project.

The sequel is expected to reunite the original cast, including R Madhavan, Sharman Joshi, and Kareena Kapoor Khan. According to Aamir, the story will move forward ten years after the events shown in the first film and revisit the lives of the beloved characters audiences connected with.

Speaking to Amar Ujala, Aamir shared his excitement about the project and praised the writing team behind it. He said, “Raju is working on 3 Idiots 2 right now. I’ve heard the story and it’s wonderful. The script still needs some work, but the story itself is really good — unusual, with the same humour as the first film. It follows the characters from 3 Idiots, picking up 10 years later.”

The actor also expressed happiness about returning to one of his most iconic characters. “It’s a beautiful story conceived by Raju and Abhijat. I’m looking forward to it, and to playing Phunsukh Wangdu again,” he said.

Released in 2009, 3 Idiots became a landmark film in Indian cinema. Directed by Rajkumar Hirani and loosely adapted from Chetan Bhagat’s novel Five Point Someone, the film explored friendship, academic pressure, and chasing passion over societal expectations. Alongside Aamir, the film featured memorable performances by Boman Irani and Omi Vaidya.

The movie not only earned massive critical acclaim but also created box office history by becoming the first Indian film to cross ₹400 crore worldwide. Over the years, it has achieved cult status through television reruns and OTT popularity.
