Actor Kangana Ranaut recently opened up about a lesser-known incident from her early days in the film industry, revealing how a compliment from Salman Khan once raised her hopes of working with celebrated filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali. However, things didn’t unfold as expected at the time.
Recalling her initial struggle in Mumbai, Kangana shared that she was barely 16 or 17 when she met Salman Khan through an acquaintance. At that point, she had not yet made her debut and was actively seeking opportunities in Bollywood. During their interaction, Salman reportedly praised her distinctive screen presence and remarked that she looked like someone who would perfectly fit into Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s cinematic world.
Encouraged by the compliment, Salman suggested that Kangana should meet Bhansali immediately, even assuring her that she would likely be signed on the spot. For a newcomer trying to establish herself, the statement felt like a huge endorsement.
Taking his advice seriously, Kangana visited Bhansali’s office with her portfolio. However, the meeting did not lead to a breakthrough. The filmmaker carefully examined her photographs but appeared unconvinced, reportedly commenting on how different she looked in each picture. Despite the promising introduction, Bhansali chose not to cast her in any project at the time.
While the initial outcome was disappointing, Kangana revealed that the story didn’t end there. According to her, Bhansali later admitted that he regretted not signing her when he had the opportunity. Over the years, he approached her for other collaborations, including a special dance number in one of his films. However, Kangana declined those offers, as she preferred roles that aligned more closely with her artistic choices.
This anecdote offers a glimpse into the unpredictable nature of the film industry, where even strong recommendations and promising meetings do not always translate into immediate success. For Kangana, the experience became just another step in her journey, as she eventually carved her own path with critically acclaimed performances and a reputation for choosing unconventional roles.
Today, her story stands as a reminder that missed opportunities can sometimes lead to bigger successes in the long run.
