Gaurav Gera and his name have always been linked to laughter. Since the adorable Nandu in Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin, to the viral shopkeeper reels that gripped social media, Gera was a man who was well established in comedy. But Dhurandhar by Aditya Dhar has torn such perceptions, showing the viewers a part of the actor that is both unfamiliar as it is formidable.
In a one-on-one interview, Gera revealed the turning point in his career: the audition to play the part of Aalam, an Indian spy who disguised himself as a milk-soda seller in Karachi. It was not an easy task to establish oneself in a high-octane thriller. Casting director Mukesh Chhabra approached Gera with a scene that had little to do with his typical comedy, and he needed a low-key, simmering determination instead of car crashes.
The audition was a serious, coated process that was played in front of a director, Aditya Dhar. Gera was forced to lose his comedic character to take on a role of a character who had lived decades in the background. This change was also physical; the actor had a trimmed and graying beard, and a wardrobe that made him look much older, thus becoming practically unrecognizable. Gera mentioned that he wanted to portray a different aspect of himself, which audiences had not previously witnessed, because actors typically get pigeonholed into certain genres.
Gera collaborated with Ranveer Singh and Akshaye Khanna, and he was in an environment where high stakes were needed, and he must have been immersed in it completely. He attributed the discipline on set to the fact that it made him focus on the seriousness of the world of Aalam. His act has since been called a masterpiece of a brilliant surprise casting and it goes to show that there is a seasoned dramatic actor behind the humorous acts. With the movie still receiving rave reviews, Gera is a tribute to the magic of re-inventing oneself, as the former family-friendly comedian had transformed into a film chameleon.
