Vivek Sinha, the actor playing the character of Zahoor Mistry (the hijacker responsible for the Kandhar airport incidents) in Dhurandhar, has issued a statement in response to the backlash he has received since the movie’s premiere. The controversy against his casting and the character’s on-screen dialogue has increased since the trailer for the sequel, Dhurandhar: The Revenge, was released, which included comments made against Hindus.
On his Instagram profile, Vivek Sinha stated that he was not the person he portrayed. In a video message, he discussed the backlash he received regarding this role, including accusations of being a terrorist with threats of physical confrontation against him. He further explained that he understood the outrage and even appreciated it as a demonstration of patriotism, noting one comment that mentioned coming after him while he was still in Pakistan.
Vivek Sinha made clear his personal identity as well as separating himself from the character he plays in the show. He explained that, although he was born in Pakistan, he was not born there; He was born and raised in Bijnor, where his home town is located; he now lives in Mumbai.
Vivek shared how audiences have responded to him. Many of them have reached a level of extreme dislike for him due to how well he acted out the character; he saw this negative response as a compliment from the audience and was appreciative for this love given to him. He ended by asking that those interested in seeing Dhurandhar 2 see it in theatres.
He reiterated this same message on his follow-up Instagram account by stating as follows: “My name is Vivek Sinha and I am not a terrorist,” which was based on one of the now-famous quotes in My Name Is Khan.
