Filmmaker Hansal Mehta is stepping into ambitious genre storytelling with Pralay, a post-apocalyptic zombie survival thriller starring Ranveer Singh. The film will headline the growing slate of Mehta’s production house True Story Films, which is rapidly building a diverse lineup of projects across multiple genres and formats.

Directed by Jai Mehta and produced in collaboration with Ranveer Singh’s banner Maa Kasam Films, Pralay is being envisioned as one of the most ambitious genre films attempted in Indian cinema. According to Hansal Mehta, the film promises to deliver a cinematic experience unlike anything previously attempted in the country.

True Story Films, which Mehta launched with producer Sahil Saigal in January 2025, is quickly expanding its portfolio. The banner is developing projects across Hindi cinema, regional films, and unscripted content.

Alongside Pralay, Mehta is also directing Porbandar, an action drama set in the birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi. The film is said to present a gritty and intense narrative that contrasts sharply with Gandhi’s legacy.

Another project currently in production is Dilkashi, a romantic musical that marks the Hindi debut of acclaimed filmmaker Lijo Jose Pellissery. Produced in collaboration with Amazon MGM Studios, the film will feature music by Oscar-winning composer A. R. Rahman. Mehta describes the film as a unique love story told through Pellissery’s distinctive cinematic style.

The company’s slate also includes Kehar Singh, directed by Ajitpal Singh, and Mehfooz, a cannibalistic horror film that has already completed development.

True Story Films is also expanding into regional cinema with projects like the Gujarati film Sardar Asardar, based on Indian statesman Vallabhbhai Patel, and the Punjabi indie Hanere de Panchi, directed by Shashank Walia.

Beyond films, the production house is exploring other formats as well. It is co-producing Family Business with Abundantia Entertainment, backing Shonali Bose’s project Tongues of the Tree starring Pratik Gandhi, and developing Rasooi, an AI-powered food series.

Producer Sahil Saigal says the aim is to run True Story Films as a boutique studio that supports projects driven by passion and creativity. Hansal Mehta also stressed that in today’s entertainment landscape, bold storytelling and creative risks are essential, adding that “audacity wins.”
