Tamil superstar and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay has reportedly been in the middle of a fierce personal scandal, when it was reported that his wife, Sangeeta Sornalingam is seeking a divorce on grounds of infidelity. The news has come as a shock to both the fans and the Tamils film industry since the couple has been married and Vijay has nurtured his personal life privacy.
Sangeeta reportedly has petitioned the Chengalpattu family court requesting them to dissolve the marriage of more than 25 years. The petition has allegedly mentioned an extramarital affair between Vijay and an actress as the major cause of the divorce. Although Vijay and his representatives did not comment on the allegations publicly yet, the news has swiftly spread through the media and among fans.

Sangeeta and Vijay got married in 1999 and are considered to have been the most stable celebrity couple in the Tamil cinema. Sangeeta, who mostly remained like a shadow, was also always present with Vijay in film events and political milestones. They got married when Vijay was becoming a superstar in Tamil cinema and in the process developed a fan following and later diversified to politics with his party TVK.
The mentioned divorce filing is a unique instance of taking the personal life under the microscope of the public who previously ignored the personal life of the person and considered it separate of his career. According to industry observers, the allegations, once proven, would have an impact on his star image and even his emerging political career since his fan following has been frequently attached to his family-focused image.
Hitherto, neither Vijay nor Sangeeta had officially tested the proceedings or allegations. There is still speculation with no explanation to fans. Whatever the end result, the reports have already become the subject of debate concerning the privacy of the celebrities, media coverage and pressures experienced by the public figures struggling with both personal and public identities.
