Speculation around the release strategy of Alpha the upcoming spy action from Yash Raj Films (YRF) has been firmly put to rest. Amid strong industry chatter suggesting a massive ₹215 crore direct-to-digital deal with Netflix India, the studio has clarified that the film will hit cinemas first.
The rumors gained attention after reports claimed that YRF had locked a lucrative streaming agreement for a straight-to-OTT premiere. However the production house has categorically denied the claims stating that Alpha remains a theatrical film and is a key title on its big screen slate.
In an official statement a YRF spokesperson emphasized that the speculation was unfounded and aimed at casting doubt on a female led action film. The studio reiterated its commitment to theatrical experiences underlining that it does not divert projects directly to streaming platforms.
Positioned within YRF’s expanding Spy Universe Alpha is headlined by Alia Bhatt and co stars Sharvari. The studio described the film as an ambitious attempt to mount a large scale cinematic spectacle expressing confidence that audiences will embrace a heroine fronted action film just as enthusiastically as other titles in the genre.
Originally set for a December 25 release last year, the film was later postponed to April 17, 2026 citing extended timelines required for visual effects (VFX). Sources indicate that the makers opted against rushing post production to maintain the scale and polish expected from a Spy Universe installment.
In recent years several high budget projects have shifted to OTT platforms amid shifting audience behaviors and box office uncertainties. However YRF appears steadfast in preserving the theatrical model for its flagship franchises.
By reiterating its big screen commitment the studio not only addresses speculation but also reinforces its belief in cinema as a collective viewing experience especially for spectacle driven action films.
With anticipation building around Alpha, the spotlight now shifts to how the film performs when it eventually arrives in theatres next year.
