If you’ve ever watched a classic Bollywood movie and thought everything looked perfect, Neena Gupta is here to remind us that the behind-the-scenes vibe was often way different. Recently the veteran actress got real on Shubhankar Mishra’s podcast about a “humiliating” moment she faced while filming the legendary song “Choli Ke Peeche Kya Hai.”
Neena shared that during the shoot for Khalnayak, director Subhash Ghai wasn’t happy with her look. Right in front of her, he told the costume designer to make her look “fuller” by using a padded bra. Honestly hearing that now sounds super uncomfortable and Neena felt the same way back then. She admitted she was extremely angary calling the whole situation “so crass.” At the time she was new to the big commercial scene and having a director talk about her body like that felt totally out of line.
What’s interesting is how Neena views it now that she’s a Bollywood icon. While she hasn’t forgotten the anger she’s softened her stance a bit.
She mentioned that today she realizes Ghai was just focused on the visual brief for the character. Neena clarified that he wasn’t being a creep or staring at her, he was just being very blunt (maybe too straightforward) about the job. Eventually the song became such a massive hit that the drama on set kind of faded into the background for her.
Even though Vadh 2 (her recent movie with Sanjay Mishra) didn’t exactly blow up the box office Neena is still booked and busy. She’s joining the cast of a new Netflix show called Chumbak, It’s written by Aatish Kapadia. Talking about the cast Sumeet Vyas and Deven Bhojani are in it so keep an eye out for that later this year.
