In the 1990s, Raveena Tandon was one of the biggest stars in Bollywood. After the huge success of Mohra, she became one of the most popular leading ladies in the industry. At that point in her career, she was being offered many big projects. But recently, she revealed that she had turned down two major opportunities and her reasons have now caught everyone’s attention.
In a recent interview, Raveena spoke about rejecting Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, which was directed by her close friend Karan Johar. The role later went to Rani Mukerji and became one of the most loved characters in the film.
Raveena explained that at that stage of her career, she could not afford to play a second lead. She had already reached a strong position as a solo heroine after Mohra, and going back to a supporting role did not feel right to her. She said she needed to restart her career as a main lead, even if it meant fewer scenes or songs. According to her, the role worked well for Rani because she was young and new in the industry. But for Raveena, it would have felt like moving backward.
She also shared that she turned down the iconic song “Chaiyya Chaiyya” from Dil Se, directed by Mani Ratnam and starring Shah Rukh Khan. Even though she loved the song and really wanted to work with Mani Ratnam, she was worried about being labelled an “item girl.” At that time, she did not want her image to change in that way.
The song was later performed by Malaika Arora and became a massive hit. “Chaiyya Chaiyya” turned into one of Bollywood’s most iconic songs and made Malaika an overnight star.
Looking back, Raveena admitted that these decisions came with some regret. But she also said that in life, you cannot do everything. Sometimes, actors have to choose what they feel is right for their career at that moment.
Her honest confession shows how difficult career decisions can be in the film industry. What may look like a missed opportunity today might have felt like the right choice at that time.
