A great connection has been established by the investigators in Mumbai between the shocking firing case outside the Juhu residence of movie producer Rohit Shetty and the murder of the former minister Baba Siddique in 2024. The relationship revolves around a prominent suspect called Shubham Lonkar who is currently being considered as a suspected mastermind in both criminal cases.
The shooting of the residence of Shetty had taken place in the early morning of January 31 2026, when a group of unknown people fired some shots outside the building of the director-producer. Although the real gunman is still on the run, the Mumbai Crime Branch, Anti-Extortion Cell has arrested a fifth accused, the name of whom is Asaram Fasle (also Babu), who supplied the weapon used in the attack. Fasle was allegedly a garage mechanic with Lawrence Bishnoi gang and performed at the behest of Shubham Lonkar.
Police purport that Lonkar had long been linked to the famous Lawrence Bishnoi gang, and investigations reveal that he did not only coordinate the logistics of the Shetty firing out but also helped in the killing of Baba Siddique outside the office of his son at Bandra East in October 2024. In the previous one, Lonkar is charged with the provision of weapons and plotting the attack that killed Siddique.
The five suspects in the Shetty firing case are in police custody as they are remanded by the Esplanade Court with charges of criminal conspiracy and an organised crime. The extended custody ordered by the courts will enable the interrogation and joint questioning of the suspects in detail because the police keep digging and are trying to figure out the connection between the two high profile cases.
Although the shooter himself has not been arrested yet, the investigation that is still taking place highlights a bigger trend of violence which is related to organised crime, which provides an additional dark backdrop to the issue of security of prominent people in Mumbai.
