Actor Imran Khan recently shared his thoughts on how casting works in Bollywood and why budgets play a major role in choosing actors. In a podcast conversation he spoke honestly about how the industry often prioritises star power over suitability for a role.
Imran revealed that A-list actors like Ranbir Kapoor and Ranveer Singh charge extremely high fees which can take up a large portion of a film’s budget. While their popularity helps bring audiences to theatres their high fees also consume a major portion of a movie’s budget. According to him this financial pressure sometimes affects creative decisions as filmmakers are forced to build the entire project around a star rather than the story.
He explained that many casting choices are made based on how much an actor can help recover the budget instead of whether they truly fit the character. He explained that when a big star is signed, the film is often shaped around that actor, making it difficult for new or lesser known actors to get good opportunities. When most of the money goes into paying actors there is less scope for experimentation, strong writing, or investing in other technical aspects of filmmaking. This can result in safer films that rely more on star power.
His comments have started discussions about the need for a better balance between star power and strong content in Bollywood. Imran’s insights remind audiences that good cinema also depends on the right casting and strong content.
