Bollywood star Varun Dhawan has struck back at online critics following the impressive box office performance of his recent film Border 2, sharing a powerful message of positivity and gratitude that resonated with fans across social media.

On Republic Day (January 26), Varun surprised fans with an impromptu appearance outside Gaiety Galaxy in Mumbai, where audiences had flocked to watch his patriotic war drama. After exiting the theatre, he stood by his car waving the Indian national flag as a large crowd of supporters cheered for him enthusiastically.

Taking to Instagram Stories, Varun shared a snapshot from the moment, writing, “Border 2 Love will always triumph hate. Thank you .” a clear message directed at those who tried to bring him down online.

Before the film’s release, Varun had faced considerable trolling on social media — particularly around his smile and expressions in the Border 2 promotional material and the song “Ghar Kab Aaoge.” Some users mocked his casting in the intense war drama, claiming he didn’t fit the role of a soldier.

However, once Border 2 hit theatres on January 23, audience reactions swung dramatically in his favour, with many praising his performance as Major Hoshiyar Singh Dahiya, PVC — a decorated Indian Army officer. The cheering fans outside the cinema and packed houses reflect how perceptions are changing once people saw the full film.

Varun hasn’t stood alone through the controversy. Veteran filmmaker Karan Johar publicly defended him on social media, criticising online negativity and emphasising that real audience appreciation always outweighs idle chatter on digital platforms. Johar’s note, widely shared across social networks, highlighted the difference between virtual noise and real-world response from viewers.

The response to Varun’s message has sparked broader conversations about how artists are judged on social media versus in real life, and how works of cinema are best evaluated based on complete performances rather than isolated clips or memes. Many fans celebrated Varun’s calm, confident reply, interpreting it as an example of letting one’s work speak louder than criticism.

As Border 2 continues to perform strongly at the box office, Varun Dhawan’s message — that “love will always triumph hate” — has become emblematic of the film’s journey from pre-release skepticism to audience acclaim.
