Border 2, the much-anticipated sequel to the classic 1997 war film Border, has ignited nostalgia and social-media buzz, especially for the surprise cameos of original stars Akshaye Khanna and Suniel Shetty that appear in a poignant end-credits scene.
The film, which hit theatres on January 23, 2026, has been widely praised for its tribute to the 1971 India-Pakistan war and its emotional storytelling. Directed by Anurag Singh and starring Sunny Deol, Varun Dhawan, Diljit Dosanjh and Ahan Shetty, Border 2 not only lives up to the legacy of its predecessor but also reconnects fans with beloved characters from the original.
At the end of Border 2, audiences were surprised to see brief appearances by Akshaye Khanna, Suniel Shetty, Puneet Issar and Sudesh Berry — reprising characters that sacrificed their lives in the first film. Clips of these cameos quickly went viral on social media, with fans celebrating the emotional homage.

However, some viewers speculated that Akshaye Khanna’s cameo might have been added to the film after the massive online attention his performance in Dhurandhar generated. Producers have now clarified those rumours. Bhushan Kumar, co-producer of Border 2, told media that the cameo appearances were part of the original plan and script, and not a last-minute addition to capitalize on Dhurandhar’s success. He explained that while the Dhurandhar buzz was high, the team never intended to exploit it for Border 2.
“You can’t make a film like that. It was already scripted,” said Bhushan Kumar. “In fact, we shot his portion after Dhurandhar released — but we never thought of profiting from it. It was never required in the script.” Director Anurag Singh also confirmed that filming for Akshaye’s cameo took place on December 10–11, and that the actors’ appearances were meant as a heartfelt tribute to the original Border ensemble.
Both Bhushan Kumar and the director stressed that the scene is emotional and rewards viewers who stay through the end credits, offering a touching moment of remembrance for the soldiers portrayed in the franchise. The cameos not only delighted long-time fans but also helped bridge the emotional legacy of the original with the newer generation of characters. Online reactions have included praise for how the sequence honors the sacrifices depicted in the original film while aligning with Border 2’s broader tribute to courage and service.
Critics and audiences alike have noted that Border 2 successfully balances nostalgic callbacks with a fresh storyline, and the cameos by veterans like Khanna and Shetty contribute to that resonance.
