Mahabharata: Aamir Khan Reveals The Reason Behind The Delay Of His Ambitious Project

Aamir Khan has once again opened up about his long-standing dream of adapting the Mahabharata for the screen, calling it…

Aamir Khan’s dream of bringing the Mahabharata to the screen has been a topic of discussion for years, and the actor has now revisited the subject with renewed clarity and caution. For Aamir, the epic is not merely a cinematic idea waiting to be explored, but a deeply emotional and cultural responsibility that demands patience, integrity, and absolute sincerity.

Speaking about the epic’s place in Indian society, Aamir described the Mahabharata as something that exists “in our blood.” From the teachings of the Bhagavad Gita to stories narrated by grandparents across generations, the epic has shaped Indian values, moral thinking, and cultural identity for centuries. This deep-rooted connection, he believes, makes any screen adaptation extraordinarily sensitive.

The actor was candid about what has held him back all these years — the fear of doing a bad job. According to Aamir, filmmakers often have the freedom to experiment or take creative liberties, but the Mahabharata does not allow for casual treatment. He remarked that while one can fail the Mahabharata, the epic itself will never fail its audience. A flawed adaptation, in his words, would only reflect the shortcomings of the filmmaker, not the greatness of the text.

Drawing parallels with global cinema, Aamir referred to the Mahabharata as the “mother of all” Hollywood-style spectacles. He pointed to franchises like The Lord of the Rings and Avatar, noting that while the world has celebrated large-scale fantasy and epic storytelling, the Mahabharata predates them all in scope, philosophical depth, and narrative complexity. If executed with honesty and scale, he believes the epic could stand as a moment of immense pride for Indians across the world.

Despite the excitement surrounding the idea, Aamir Khan is in no rush. He has chosen patience over haste, reiterating that the project will only move forward when he is fully confident that it can be mounted with the respect, emotional truth, and cinematic grandeur it deserves. Until then, the Mahabharata remains his most cherished — and most carefully guarded — dream.
