Kangana Ranaut revisits 2016 through an Instagram trend, calling it a “living hell” as she reflects on career highs, emotional turmoil, and the widely discussed controversy involving Hrithik Roshan.

Actor Kangana Ranaut recently took a reflective turn while participating in Instagram’s trending prompt, “2026 is the new 2016.” While many users revisited the year with nostalgia, Kangana offered a sharply contrasting perspective, describing 2016 as one of the most difficult phases of her life — a period she bluntly termed a “living hell.”

Sharing a carousel of throwback pictures from that year, Kangana posted mirror selfies flaunting her short-hair look, alongside glimpses from professional moments. The photos included a still with her Rangoon co-star Shahid Kapoor and another image from an event where she was seen with Arjun Kapoor. Though the visuals reflected confidence and success, her caption revealed the emotional weight behind those appearances.

In a candid note, Kangana explained that 2016 was a paradoxical year for her. Professionally, she was riding a career high following the massive success of Queen and Tanu Weds Manu Returns, which firmly established her as one of Bollywood’s top actresses at the time. Personally, however, she said her life took a drastic turn in January 2016 after receiving a controversial legal notice from a “colleague,” a clear reference to the dispute that later involved Hrithik Roshan.

According to Kangana, the legal notice changed everything. She wrote that the episode fractured the film industry into “insiders and outsiders,” turning her professional success into something she described as “poisonous.” What followed, she said, were relentless legal battles, invasive media scrutiny, and immense emotional distress that overshadowed her achievements.

With the benefit of hindsight, Kangana admitted that time has altered her perspective. She noted that if she had known then how little the controversy would matter years later, she would not have allowed it to consume her happiness. Ending her reflection on a lighter note, the actor shared that she is now in a far better space — laughing more, enjoying food without guilt, and finally leaving the past behind.

The Kangana–Hrithik controversy dominated headlines in 2016 after the actress referred to Hrithik as her “ex” during interviews, a claim he strongly denied. Hrithik later sent her a legal notice seeking an apology, which Kangana refused, alleging it was an attempt to silence her. The dispute spiralled into a prolonged legal and media saga involving allegations, counter-allegations, leaked emails, and investigations.

Despite that turbulent chapter, Kangana has remained firmly active in the industry. She has an ambitious slate ahead, including Bharat Bhagya Vidhata, Queen 2, Tanu Weds Manu 3, and Manikarnika Returns: The Legend of Didda, all expected to release in 2026.

Through her recent post, Kangana once again highlighted the complex cost of fame — showing that behind success and glamour often lie struggles best healed by time, distance, and perspective.
